Many volunteer programmes fail to check in with volunteers as they are leaving the programme. This is mission critical to building better volunteer experiences, as well as for better understanding why people leave and what can most effectively be done to improve retention in the future.

Many volunteer programmes are managed by anecdote rather than by data, and often shaped by how it has always been. With strong gathering and analysis of data it is possible to apply much more of a science to how to effectively recruit, engage, and retain volunteers, and how to maximise the impact of volunteers for policing and in their communities.

Policing faces tough times in terms of rising demand, limited resources, and some generational new challenges. If volunteering is going to be embraced strategically as part of the solution - rather than just seen as a side issue, and as another cost - then the business case needs to be made. Volunteer programmes need to be able to communicate their value.
